i

the between

The name digiterior lives in the "between" of interior and exterior. The digital is neither a transcendence outside substance nor an organ enclosed within it. It is the medium that stands in between.

Spinoza said: God, that is, Nature. There is no outside to substance. Everything is a modification of a single substance, and there is no vantage point from which to look in from outside. Software, too, does not function outside hardware. Information is physical.

So we stand neither inside nor outside. We stand in the "between." A shoji screen is neither in nor out, but a membrane that lets light through. A stone wall releases force through the gaps between stone and stone. The between is not a weak place, but a living one.

ii

the many within one

In football there is the term polyvalent. One who can enjoy many positions widens their chances. This is not being a jack-of-all-trades — the diversity is already within, and the question is whether the environment and the encounters to draw it out arrive.

Trace DNA back thirty-two generations and there are 4.2 billion people within you. The fixed self-image of "this is the kind of person I am" collapses before that number. You were never one person, but a bundle of 4.2 billion possibilities.

Epigenetic——DNA

Epigenetics — the DNA is fixed, but what is expressed changes with environment and relationship. Just as the Japanese language was colorful from birth, a person, too, is many-colored from birth.

iii

the looseness

The idea of the heuristic, from information processing — plot the results and they converge around here, but never onto a single point. Push further and they may scatter again, or settle into a vague thereabouts. It allows a looseness that is a little apart from the correct answer. And from there, one moves on to the next.

A dry-stone wall does not collapse because it leaves gaps. A wall set hard with mortar lets a single crack run through the whole. Looseness is not weakness; it is the structure that absorbs complexity. Here lies the difference between KANRI and Control.

iv

the fertile error

Correctness is in the dictionary. But what is in the dictionary, anyone can look up. beau seems like the shaved-down remainder of "beautiful," yet in being shaved it loses no beauty — it condenses into a single word. Monsieur is read "muh-syuh" — in a word where spelling and sound diverge this far, the divergence itself becomes richness. An error is not the absence of correctness. It is something not yet named.

The broken spelling the hand remembers is so alive that even its author cannot reproduce it exactly. The same in the short term, drifting over the long. There seems to be a rule, and yet there is none. If fixed correctness is dead memory, an error that keeps moving is living proof. To keep changing is, paradoxically, to preserve identity — as a spiral looks like a circle only when seen from above.

KANRI does not erase an erroneous line. It simply adds one line of correction. A mistake is not a shame to be deleted, but lives on as the history of its correction. Instead of overwriting and erasing the past, it lets both error and correctness accumulate through time. An error can be corrected, and it is all in how you make use of it. Dynamic equilibrium — memory and cells keep being rewritten, and yet something stays coherent. The moment you freeze it in fear of error, that coherence dies.

v

the spiral

The same theme returns, its angle shifted a little each time. The parting words of Mochida Moriji, tenth dan: "It took fifty years to reach the basics." "Only after fifty did the real training begin." "Because I tried to do kendo with the heart." Just when you think fifty years have converged you onto the basics, a new scattering begins from there.

When I indexed a blog I had simply left as written, twenty years on, a spiral appeared. Sequencing, focus, looseness, play — a single article written in my youth was walking the same ground as my words twenty-one years later. A spiral looks like a circle only when seen from above.

Dynamic equilibrium (Shin-Ichi Fukuoka) — memory and cells keep being rewritten. And still, something stays coherent. Coherence within the rewriting — that is the true nature of the spiral.

vi · the keystone

to play, to enjoy, to master

At the very top of the fan, at the pivot, I place the single character . 楽 = PLAY. To play, to enjoy, and to master. This one character explains all of the lower stones — the between, the many, the looseness, the spiral.

The one who knows is no match for the one who loves; the one who loves is no match for the one who enjoys. To enjoy is the summit, above knowing and above loving.

And Spinoza left it written as a condition of the wise —

It befits the wise to make use of things and to take pleasure in them as far as possible — to refresh and restore oneself with well-prepared, savory food and drink, with fragrance, with the pleasing beauty of green plants, with adornment, music, sport, and theatre, and with all such things that one may use without harming others. Spinoza, Ethics, Part IV, Prop. 45, Scholium

Written in the seventeenth century, these words have not aged at all. The reversal that the human who pursues enjoyment is the most intelligent of all. The condition "without harming others" is the very skeleton of Smart Life Styles™.

Reaching the level where one can enjoy — acquiring a high skill — takes time. There are painful stretches with no improvement. To enjoy the failures and setbacks that carry you to the next level — that is the spirit of Play, and that is what it means to master.

The pivot is the narrowest single point of the fan. Yet fasten it, and the fan can open as wide as you like. All of Digiterior’s activity opens out from this one point.
